William Ruto Spearheads Planting 150 Million Trees in Kenya

The 13th of November was a special day for Kenya’s environment, with the government declaring it a tree-planting holiday. Kenya’s government aimed to plant 150 million trees across the country, taking another step closer to the net-zero gas emissions campaign.

Kithuri Kindiki, CS of Internal Affairs, seedlings had been mobilized nationwide, allowing every Kenyan to participate in the tree planting campaign. Chiefs were to foresee the tree planting activity locally/at the lowest level of governance.

During his address, the minister also echoed the need to take care of the trees till maturity. He also encouraged the young ones to take up the mandate at the school level, directly associating it with their future.

The 150 million is a step closer to the projected 15 billion by 2032. This shows President Ruto’s seriousness in changing the course of climate change. With Kenya amongst Sub-Saharan nations highly affected by climate calamities, such tree-planting initiatives will save the ecosystem and contribute to the ongoing carbon offsets plan.

Moreover, Kenya is already going through heavy rains, yet another climate-related calamity after an extended drought early in 2023.

According to the NEMA (National Environment Management Authority), Kenya has a forest cover of 7.4%, having a 3.6% deficit of the constitutionally mandated 10% cover. Therefore, increasing Kenya’s forest cover is vital in controlling such severe climate change conditions.
