The EAC Climate Change Summit Takes Place in Arusha

East African nations’ Presidents convened in Arusha, 23-24 NOV, for the 23rd Ordinary Summit. The conference focuses on discussing climate change and food security in the region. The theme of the summit is “Accelerating Economic Recovery through Climate Action and Enhancing Food Security for Improved Livelihoods.”

The Arusha Summit comes at the right time, with different climatic dangers directly affecting different Eastern African countries. For instance, various Kenyan regions are facing the wrath of heavy rains, with experts stating it’s a reincarnation of ElNino rains. This is a similar case in Ethiopia, and Somalia, which is facing the worst end of climate change in 2023.

Food security is a major concern in the region. This is considering the state of the world economy, leaving African third-world nations at risk of food and finance deprivation. It’s almost inevitable for EAC to suffer as most depend on foreign climate and food finance. Therefore, the Arusha Summits aim to find sustainable solutions.

In her Speech, Tanzania’s head of state, Samia Suluhu Hassan, urged the President in attendance to fight for self-sustainability through Africa’s natural resources. True to that, EAC countries are some of the biggest Agricultural nations, capable of feeding their citizens and exporting finished produce for profits. She urged Kenya’s president and climate enthusiast, William Ruto, to start pushing for self-sustainability, especially in climate finance. Moreover, this will help EAC nations to avoid huge international debts, which can bind and hinder youth development in the food and climate sector as well as affect future generations.
