Floods are continuing to wreak havoc in Africa in the first half of 2024. South Africa’s eastern coast floods is the latest victim, with the area registering 22 deaths in June’s first week.
The rains were a result of two tornados that also lead to low temperatures. As a result various areas like the central region experienced snow. Moreover, there were at least 11 casualties in the Eastern cape. This according to Nelson Mandela Bay municipality, who also stated that over 2,000 people have been evacuated.
The other 11 died around the port city of Durban, while the Kwazulu-Natal provincial authorities declared a state of alert. This isn’t the first time Durban is getting flooded, the area experienced the country’s worst flash flooding back in 2022. The climatic disaster’s severity led to the death of 400 people.
Among the damages is the destruction of property, and infrastructure. Unfortunately, a huge chunk of tree cover was also destroyed. Also, the floods led to widespread blackouts.
The Meteorological department has continued to warn of more impending heavy rainfall. Respective province authorities should boost their rescuing measures, including getting more personnel and resources.
