President Tinubu Appoints Nigeria’s Climate Change Council Leaders

Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu approved Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe’s appointment as Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC). This is according to the Special Adviser to the state head, Chief Ajuri Ngelale who also stated that her approval will be confirmed by the NCCC’s Supervisory Council. 

Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe’s appointment comes at the right time, when Tinubu’s tries to push for a green economy. Additionally, the move comes at a time when the country is trying to encourage foreign investors in matters of climate, energy and agriculture. 

True to that, Ngelale stated that the 39 yr old appointment will boost investor confidence and unlock sustainable economic value through various climate finance instruments.

Dr. Nkruka is the right person for the job, having held notable positions before, and coming with a list of achievements.

    • She holds a Bachelor of Law degree
    • Has a Master’s degree in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK),
    • She has a Doctorate degree in Law from the University of Hull (UK).

Additionally, the Doctorate holder has served as the Nigeria National Coordinator, Climate Parliament, for 15 years. Lastly, she has served as the Legal advisor to the NCCC Director-General. 

Other appointments approved include Mr. Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng as the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Climate Finance and Stakeholder Engagement.
