The county government of Kirinyaga, Kenya, led by Governor Ann Waiguru, offered and supplied 600 women and households with the Afri Gas brand. This is a bid to stop environmentally damaging activities like deforestation, and eventually control global warming.
According to Governor Ann Waiguru, the climate mitigation initiative is meant to improve the health and living standards of Kirinyaga people, especially the women. True to that, Kirinyaga women had to initially make use of unhealthy ways like wood and charcoal.
Another unhealthy alternative fire source for residents of Nagariama, Kirinyaga was the use of ‘cow dung’. Together with wood, and charcoal, they’re notorious for their high carbon dioxide output, a health risk for children and ailing individuals. Governor Waiguru also highlighted the dangers of carbon dioxide to the environment, and connected it to the recent weather change patterns.
Extended drought and el nino occurrence were heavily mentioned, considering Kenya has suffered both in less than a year. Currently, various regions are facing heavy rainfall, the resulting floods causing displacement and destruction of property.
Therefore, the Kenya government is taking front foot in fighting climate change. Efforts made by the Kirinyaga government can go a long way in creating a sustainable environment for everyone, ensuring the country pushes for African net-zero emissions goals.
