Morocco to Build Flood Protection Channel for Tangier Tech City

Morocco's Tangier Tech City

Morocco has announced plans to construct a flood channel to protect the Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City industrial zone, a key project developed in partnership with China.

The initiative formalized through Decree No. 2.24.1146 on January 23, 2024, aims to safeguard the Tangier-Assilah region from potential flooding, ensuring the industrial hub’s safety and sustainability.

About Tangier Tech City

The Mohammed VI Tangier Tech City project, unveiled in 2017 by King Mohammed VI, has seen significant progress through strategic partnerships. In 2019, a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed during the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, involving the Tangier Tech Development Corporation (TSA), China Communications Construction Company Limited International (CCCC), and its subsidiary, China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC).

In 2020, a virtual signing ceremony further solidified this collaboration, with CCCC/CRBC acquiring approximately 35% of the Tangier Tech City Development Corporation’s shares. Other shareholders include the Bank of Africa (BMCE), the Tangier-Tetouan-Al Hoceima region, and the Tangier Med Special Agency.

Therefore, the flood channel project underscores Morocco’s commitment to sustainable infrastructure and risk management. This guarantees the industrial zone’s resilience and long-term success. Additionally, the initiative highlights the nation’s proactive approach to sustainable development and its role as a regional leader in industrial innovation.
