Morocco Hit with Another Heatwave

Morocco authorities have issued an orange alert, with temperatures expected to hit 40-44 Degrees Celsius. This occured throughout the second week of May (Tuesday 7th to Friday 10th).

According to the General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM), areas directly affected include the provinces of Assa-Zag, Es-Semara, Boujdour, Oued Ed-Dahab, and Aousserd

The heatwave news hit as the country still recovers from another climate change disaster, floods, which occurred in March. Moreover, the country has faced extended periods of drought due to the El Nino rains and long periods of high temperatures.

Therefore, the rise in temperatures can lead to food shortages and crisis. It’s also affecting the normal weather patterns and inevitably impacting sectors like agriculture and energy. True to that, Agriculture Minister Mohamed Sadiki highlights that the rainfall volume is 27% below average compared to the last 30 years.

On the brighter side, solar power plants can benefit during the ongoing heatwave. They can harness the natural sun and create renewable energy to solve the energy crisis within the country. However, this needs proper investments. Luckily, Morocco is a renewable energy hub that has been identified by foreign companies from France and Spain.

Nonetheless, solutions for the consistent heatwaves are necessary. The government can involve the youth and women to help include everyone in the fight against global warming and climate change
