Malawians should brace for a rise in temperatures in October. According to the country’s meteorological department, the projected 44C rise is due to the ongoing emissions of warming gasses and El Niño weather occurrences.
Despite the expected October warm weather, this year will see a significant rise. Areas to experience maximum temperature include the southern Shire Valley (44C) and the northern regions along Lake Malawi (40C). This is a similar case of the ongoing intense heat waves affecting the areas of North Africa, Europe, the United States, and Mexico in July.
Authorities encourage individuals to be cautious, with cases of severe dehydration expected. They advise people to avoid consuming alcohol and caffeine, which can cause worse dehydration in such harsh temperatures.
Other vulnerable citizens are older people, closely related to the escalation of heart conditions. Additionally, children and individuals with pre-existing conditions should avoid direct exposure.
This isn’t the first climatic change phenomenon Malawi has faced this year, with the country yet to recover from the February and March Cyclone Freddy. Therefore, this is yet another climate change effect that will test the readiness of the nation to deal with climatic disasters.
Young Malawian innovators are encouraged to come up with respective technologies. Conversely, the government should develop measures to minimize the effects of the heatwave and ensure the third-world economy runs efficiently.
