A trip around X reveals Kenyans’ frustration towards Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC). True to that, the national electricity provider is failing to offer consistent power, with most blaming mismanagement and privatization rumors of the public company by Adani Power.
2024 has recorded various random national power blackouts, with Jomo Kenyatta International Airport affected by some power outages. In September’s first week alone, the country had two blackouts, with KPLC not explaining the cause.
Meanwhile, there has been a series of blackouts, with various regions going days without power while others are handling what seems like load shedding. Kahawa West, Nairobi residents suffered such a pattern for three consecutive days. They suffered power outages between 7 pm-to-1:30 pm between October 27th and 30th.
Homa Bay County residents face a similar predicament, leaving healthcare facilities and schools struggling. Currently, Ndiwa Sub-county residents demand power restoration after two gruesome weeks in the dark. This came after two electricity poles fell in Otange village, close to Sukari Industry.
According to a resident, Jecinter Akinyi, “It has reached a point where we cannot serve our customers because of lack of electricity. This situation denies us our source of livelihood that helps us feed our families and pay school fees.”
This is the case in most parts of the country, with KPLC constantly announcing power outages in different regions. Lack of urgency in sorting out the power disruptions is a big problem with Kenyans on X ridiculing KPLC’s incompetence through memes and comedy clips.
Nonetheless, whether KPLC is executing load shedding is raising concerns. KPLC has yet to give a conclusive answer, with Kenyans only hoping they aren’t next in the random power cuts.
