The holiday season in Africa is a time for joy, celebration, and togetherness. However, it’s also a time when environmental pollution significantly increases. From increased waste generation to higher energy consumption, the festive period often puts a strain on our delicate ecosystems.
But this doesn’t have to be the case. By making conscious choices, we can all contribute to a cleaner and greener holiday season.
Firstly, we have to make better decoration choices. You should choose decors crafted from natural materials like dried flowers, twigs, and recycled items. Consider LED lights for energy-efficient and long-lasting illumination.
Also, everyone should employ the “Reduce, Re-use, and Recycle” policy. Therefore, minimize single-use plastics by opting for reusable bags, containers, and cutlery. Since it’s a gifting season, too, embrace eco-friendly gift-wrapping options like cloth or recycled paper.
Traveling is another crucial factor, as fossil fuel pollution is projected to rise. We can reduce this by opting for eco-friendly transportation. Fortunately, there are cab companies that strictly adopt electric vehicle use. This is especially true in East African countries like Kenya. Also, traveling in groups should be considered to minimize fossil vehicle use.
Additionally, employ mindful consumption. Avoid excessive food purchases and donate any surplus to those in need.
Lastly, it will be key to spreading awareness of clean environmental practices. This can come in handy for those traveling from urban regions to rural areas. We are all involved in saving the environment for a better future.
Happy holidays from ACC!
