Flash Floods Hit Namibia’s Capital, Windhoek

The New Year, 2025 has started on a low for Namibia, with the country experiencing devastating flash floods since 5th January. The capital, Windhoek has been worst hit, with streets filled with flood water and unknown worth of infrastructure destroyed.

Videos going around social media are showing a devastating situation. For instance, a video recorded in Sewan, Windhoek shows, houses almost submerged in flooding water, while roads have been rendered impassable.

Authorities and the Namibian Meteorological Service had earlier warned about potential heavy rainfall on Thursday, 2nd Jan, especially around the capital area.

“Residents should clear trash and garden waste from drainage systems to stop blockages. People living in areas that are often flooded are advised to gather emergency items like sandbags and plastic sheets,” said City of Windhoek spokesperson Lydia Amutenya.

The authorities urged people to report any water sewer system failures and also warned them against consuming food supplies contaminated with flood water.

The rains are expected to continue till Tuesday, 7th January. Residents have been urged to stay alert to alerts and vacate immediately and a warning is issued.
