Monday September 4th marks the start of the long awaited Africa Climate Summit, setting stage for the engagement of Africans and respective foreign delegates on matters Climate. Climate finance will be a priority, with entities such as the African Development Bank (AFDB) expected to push for the same.
The agenda takes more focus, with Africa facing the worst of global climate change, despite being the lowest emitting continent. This isn’t to forget the $100bn promised to Africa back in 2009, partially undertaken over the years.
Additionally, Africa will need more compensation with its goal being creating a green environment with net zero emission. It is estimated that Africa needs an estimated $579.2bn in adaptation finance between 2020–2030, with recent studies suggesting an inevitable increase of the budget.
It’s only automatic for respective leaders like President William Samoei Ruto to mention such in the September 2023 African Climate Summit.
Ahead of Monday’s Summit, Kenyan Environment Minister Soipan Tuya said, “We aim to start changing the conversation from Africa, the victim of hunger, famine, and floods.”
This isn’t to forget that planning ahead of the COP28 is one of the Summit’s main agendas. Also, expect mentions of Africa’s potential and the recent exploration of the Carbon Markets.
We expect the discussion on Climate Finance to be extensive as parties involved find ways to help Africa reach a net zero emission and green environment. It is achievable, with Africa accounting for only 3% of the world’s total pollution.
