The African Development Bank (AfDB) is reinforcing its commitment to Africa’s renewable energy transition through a €26.5 million ($29.4 million) funding package for a 62-MWp solar project in Togo. Developed by Meridiam and EDF, the Sokode solar park—set to generate 87 GWh annually—exemplifies AfDB’s strategic investments in sustainable infrastructure.
The financing includes an €18.5 million AfDB loan and an €8 million concessional loan from the Sustainable Energy Fund for Africa (SEFA), supplemented by France’s Proparco. This collaboration underscores AfDB’s role in mobilizing international capital for Africa’s energy sector.
The €61 million project aligns with Togo’s target of 200 MWp renewable capacity by 2030 and will reduce reliance on thermal power while enhancing grid stability through an 11-km transmission line.
AfDB’s involvement reflects its broader mandate to unlock Africa’s clean energy potential. By prioritizing bankable projects with high developmental impact, the institution is bridging financing gaps and advancing the continent’s climate resilience. This initiative mirrors AfDB’s New Deal on Energy for Africa, which aims to achieve universal electricity access by 2030 through public-private partnerships.
As Africa’s energy demand grows, AfDB continues to champion scalable solutions, proving that strategic investments can simultaneously drive economic growth and decarbonization. The Sokode project sets a precedent for future renewable ventures across the continent.
