Denmark Boosts Contribution to African Development Fund by 40%

The Danish government has boosted its investment in Africa’s Green Future by 40%, accounting for €201m. The finance aims to bolster support from the fund’s other development partners, accelerate the delivery of the 2030 SDGs. Importantly, the announcement made during a Nordic-African foreign affairs ministers’ meeting in Zimbabwe, respects and fulfills part of the Paris Agreement climate agenda on the African continent.

The Danish government’s early commitment to the fund comes ahead of a replenishment pledging session due to take place with the fund’s development partners in December. Therefore, it sets a strong example for other western nations to follow especially as we approach COP30 in Brazil. Additionally, the commitment stands in contrast to the global trend in cuts to development aid budgets globally over the past two years.

According to Lars Løkke Rasmussen, Denmark’s minister for foreign affairs, “The fund is a vital partner for African countries, delivering tangible impact on people’s lives. We encourage other countries to join us in supporting robust replenishment. Only together can we meet the world’s most pressing development and climate challenges.” He added.

Through its partnership with African Development Bank, AFDB, the leadership aims to tackle critical climate change challenges, and reach youth and women. Through AFDB, marginalised groups and rural areas can access the funding.
