Floods Cause Havoc Again in Benghazi, Benina District, Libya

Libya has experienced another devastating flood in 2024, the latest hitting the Benina district, Benghazi. This is after heavy rainfall poured throughout the 4th of December, destroying crucial social amenities like infrastructure and drainages.

A video shared via X shows flood rapids washing away vehicles while volunteers try to rescue affected citizens. According to reports, poor drainages in highly populated Benina locations heightened the impact of the flood.

The recent Libya floods come after the catastrophic damage caused by the Strom Daniel and Derna dams catastrophic floods. A record 45,000 plus people were displaced, with hundreds more still unaccounted for a year later.

Dec 4th’s heavy rain damage extent is still unknown, but the authorities anticipate multiple deaths, injuries, and property damage. The authorities have yet again been caught unprepared, with volunteers accounting for most rescue operations.

Moreover, this explains how Africa urgently needs better climate mitigation action and a climate finance boost. With ample support, countries like Libya can afford to handle floods and other climate change calamities and create a sustainable environment for everyone.
