Trillions Not Billions: Africa Unpleased at COP29 Azerbaijan Summit

African negotiators are yet again struggling to achieve climate justice through failed COP29 financial talks. At the beginning of the summit, the NCQG tabled an alternative climate finance deal, significantly decreasing the Paris Agreement’s suggested amount from trillions to billions.

Whether in COP29 podiums or X social spaces, Africans have expressed dissatisfaction with Western and other developed nations.

South African Karabo Mokgonyana (She/Her) has been among the vocal negotiators and activists, making the phrase ‘Trillions Not Billions’ popular in Baku. She has also led Africans to air the same via her @K_Mokgonyana (X page)

Climate Reality Africa, popularly known as AficaCRP (ACRP), has also expressed frustration towards the ongoing COP29 Baku talks. Their Nov 21st X post states, “ACRP is deeply frustrated and outraged by the draft NCQG unveiled at COP29. This text fails to deliver the clear, actionable financial commitments urgently needed to support fair and equitable climate action and resilience across Africa.”

Greenpeace Africa, a leading green environment, added to the topic, stating, “We will hum to the strings of climate justice. Snap our fingers at the demands for accountability, and we won’t stop until all polluters pay.”

As the COP29 Summit closes, hopes for equitable climate finance have dwindled. The EU and developed nations offer a mere $200 billion, while the initial plans were to coerce over $1 trillion.

Without hopes of building a sustainable environment, poorer African nations might have to continue facing the wrath of global warming. Undoubtedly, most will drop deep under the debt rabbit hole, where most funds get lost through mismanagement and corruption.
