Cabinet Secretary Hon. Aden Duale plants a tree
The 10th of October marked the second Mazingira Day (Environmental day) since its introduction by President William Ruto in 2023. It was formerly known as Utamaduni Day, and was renamed after the President signed the Statute Law (Miscellaneous Amendment Bill), 2024, into law. It is a significant day, considering the need to focus on climate change and environmental factors as a continent.
Kenyans marked Mazingira Day in style with the Environment Cabinet Secretary Aden Duale, encouraging Kenyans to promote a sustainable environment through planting trees, and clearing wastes from drainage systems. He led the Mazingira Day commemoration at the Nairobi Arboretum, where he also planted trees.
You’ll be glad to know that planting trees is a government initiative to rehabilitate 10.6 million hectares of degraded land by 2032, where the plan is to plant 15 billion trees by the same year. Therefore, tree planting was a major activity for different groups countrywide, where schools also engaged students in the practice.
Other notable entities and organizations including sports groups like Kenya Rugby Union participated, following the example from county and national government leaders. Respective agencies and NGOs took the opportunity to educate Kenyans on the importance of a sustainable environment in the long-term plan of saving Africa’s climate.
Also, Kenyans went online under the #MazingiraDay, where they shared the activities of the day. Different groups cleaned the streets, while others ran educative programs to the public. Visit the hashtag for more information on Kenya’s environmental day (Mazingira Day).
