Nigerian Zoo Affected by Devastating Floods

No one is safe from the ongoing devastating floods in Nigeria, with zoo animals being the latest casualties. So far, the floods have killed 80% of animals held in a large zoo, consisting of species like, lions, crocodiles, ostriches and buffaloes.

Worrying enough, other animals like crocodiles have been washed away and are part of the society.

“Some deadly animals have been washed away into our communities, like crocodiles and snakes,” Sanda Kyarimi Park Zoo added in a statement on the floods in northern Borno State. The authorities have urged residents t o stay safe and report any sightings of wildlife.

According to Nigeria’s President Bola Tinubu’s office, the floods started from an overflowing Alau dam after heavy rains, which also displaced thousands of residents. The office also urged people in the affected regions to find safety. True to that, the floods have also affected Maiduguri’s post office and a teaching hospital.

Nigeria accounts for one of the most affected countries by flooding in West and Central Africa, where over 700,000 people have been affected. It is a high chance respective authorities learn to handle controllable disasters like an overflowing dam. Arguably, the Alau dam damage could have been controlled.
