Respective authorities in Algeria and Morocco have given out warnings regarding the intensifying heatwaves, with temperatures expected to soar to 117 degrees Fahrenheit (47 degrees Celsius).
Algeria’s National Meteorological Office is warning the provinces; Adrar, Ain Salah, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Timimoun, and Tindouf. Similar alerts are underway for provinces including Ain Delfa, Batna, Chlef, Djelfa, El Bayadh, Medea, M’Sila, Relizane, and Tissemsilt.
Meanwhile, Morocco’s Directorate General of Meteorology has followed Algeria’s heat advisory measures across much of the country.
Authorities may issue additional alerts or update existing advisories based on climate change and changing weather conditions in the coming days.
Heatwaves have been rampant in the continent. For instance, Southern Africa experienced severe heat waves earlier this year.
Morocco faced a tragic earthquake last year, resulting in more than 2,900 fatalities and over 5,600 injuries. Recently, victims of this earthquake protested outside Parliament in Rabat, expressing dissatisfaction with the government’s response to the disaster. They are advocating for increased support and compensation.
