The Adaptation Network convened its annual Colloquium at Cape Town’s Protea Fire & Ice Hotel from July 14-16, 2024, amidst recent extreme weather patterns linked to climate change.
Despite weather disruptions, the event remained on track, featuring a Mobile Journalism Masterclass and sessions focused on climate adaptation. Starting on July 14 with the Masterclass and continuing with the main program on July 15, the Colloquium serves as a vital platform for over 400 members from civil society, academia, and public/private sectors to exchange ideas and showcase innovations.
Penelope Price, Coordinator of the Adaptation Network, noted challenges posed by recent weather but assured favorable conditions during the event. The Colloquium aims to bolster adaptive capacity and reduce climate vulnerability, particularly among marginalized groups, underscoring its role in policy engagement and knowledge sharing.
Highlights include sessions on community-based adaptation, creative climate communications, and interactive masterclasses on visual art and performance in climate storytelling. The program also features a mini film festival showcasing local climate content and culminates in an exhibition and cocktail dinner, fostering ongoing dialogue.
Vanessa Farr will address intersectional approaches in climate storytelling, while Gina Ziervogel and Lavinia Perumal explore innovative climate solutions through design thinking. Discussions will span topics like biodiversity conservation and climate resilience.
Overall, the Colloquium underscores the urgency of climate resilience in South Africa, offering collaborative solutions to combat climate challenges through inclusive dialogue and innovative approaches.
