Lagos Hit with Fresh Floods

Nigeria’s capital, Lagos has been hit with fresh floods, leading to injuries and home demolitions. This includes a two-story building that injured sevaral people, while other 7 seven had to be rescued from the ruins.

“Early this morning [Wednesday], seven people were rescued alive from a building in Ewenla, Mushin, that collapsed in the inclement weather,” The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority, LASEMA, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu said.

Additionally, the floods were a result of a 10-hour downpour also halting commercial and business activities. Social media posts show vehicles halfway submerged on the roads, while business complexes/premises are flooded.

Authorities have advised citizens in specified areas to avoid any unnecessary travel until the floods subside. Osanyintolu stated “We are urging the good people of Lagos to remain calm and refrain from any non-essential travel due to the incidence of flash floods across the state.”

This is the first flash flood calamity of 2024, with Nigeria early in the year facing flooding due the rise of sea levels. Therefore, there’s a need for urgent climate mitigation measures to curb the radical climate change

President Bola Tinubu should continue prioritizing climate change matters. This includes having proper disaster management strategies.
