Kenya was amongst the worst hit nations by the heavy rains and the Cyclone Hidaya. The latter however largely affected neighboring country Tanzania. Nonetheless, Kenya faced great loss including loss of lives, degraded land, infrastructure destruction, and disruption of the general economy.
The climate change phenomena claimed 267 lives after three weeks of heavy downpour. The Interior Minister Kithuri Kindiki also stated 188 others were or partially injured, while 75 are still missing.
Regarding the damage, over 389,000 people have been directly affected. Around 56,000 have been evacuated.
The Agricultural sector has been alerted and affected by the flash floods. This is through the destruction of crops, storage, and land degradation. The floods have damaged over 9,000 acres and resulted in the loss of 4,000 livestock.
According to Minister Kithuri Kindiki, 167 camps have been set up to help the respective victims. This is a great response from the government, proving its improvement in disaster management strategies.
