The Red Cross and Kenya Met Department flood warning came true. Various Kenyan regions are experiencing heavy rains, displacing over 2,000 people and counting. Unfortunately, local media reports that about 15 individuals have died following the climate calamity.
The flooding situation seems to be getting worse, and is affecting other sectors like transport. For instance, 51 bus passengers were rescued after the vehicle was swept away from an overflowing bridge in Northern Kenya.
Agriculture is another sector taking a hit from climate change. There’s the destruction of farm’s produce, thus escalating the food crisis situation in the country.
Additionally, rural and slum regions like Kibera are facing the worst end of the situation. Kibera residents especially have been rendered homeless, with structures collapsing from the heavy rain. Meanwhile, residents in rural areas are living in a worry of landslides and soil degradation.
According to Willis Omulo, a resident of Homa Bay “We have people who have been internally displaced, who don’t have a place to call home, no roof on top of their heads, their farmlands have been submerged,”
Only time will tell how much damage can happen in different Kenyan areas. They unfortunately join different global regions like Russia, and fellow African nations such as South Africa, currently facing the wrath of climate change through extreme flooding.
Therefore, it’s upon everyone to join the African climate mitigation agenda. It will come in handy having protective measures like evacuation strategies, or long term solutions such as tree planting to control flooding.
