The African Development Bank has approved a loan ($50 million) for the Environmental and Climate Change Action Project (ECCAP). The Yobe State funding aims to improve the region’s climate resilience and facilitate food security and production.
Additionally, the climate finance will help improve the area’s livelihoods, especially by involving youth and women in the climate mitigation agenda. This is according to AFDB’s Dr. Akinwumi Adesina, who has continued emphasizing the need for Africa to stand on its own in fighting climate change.
The loan is part of the total $101.34 million cost, with beneficiaries contributing $16.52 million while Yobe state will contribute $4.52 million.
The AFDB EACCAP’s funding will be handy in controlling drought and desertification. The loan will go a long way in helping Nigeria rehabilitate vast degraded lands from deforestation and help build a sustainable economy and a climate-resilient ecosystem.
Moreover, involving minority groups like women will assist in educating everyone on the dangers of climate change. Women and youth will be supported by distributing climate-friendly and clean energy supplies like cooking stoves.
Yobe region got the loan approval as it is the most vulnerable Nigerian state to climate change. Also, 72% of its population is under the poverty line, highlighting the need for the AFDB climate funding.
