The UN Agencies on the 25th of January in the Republic of the Congo mobilized approximately $3.6 million U.S. dollars for flood victims in the nation. Minister of Social Affairs and Solidarity and Humanitarian Action Irene Marie Cecile Mboukou-Kimbatsa was handed disaster relief aid by the international entity.
Regardless of their readiness, Congo would be unable to handle the impacts of the heavy rainfall. This is because of the country’s political state and the inability to handle previous climate disasters.
Moreover, the recent flood tragedy is the worst in 60 years. 26 health-medical facilities plus120 schools were affected. Additionally, over 300 people died and 6,178 people were displaced. Therefore, the burden would be close to unattainable for the 3rd world nation.
The UN funding will be added to the created national solidarity fund. The latter had collected a total of $3.2 million.
Therefore, the Republic of Congo is an example of how African countries are unable to survive under the harsh conditions of climate change. The country provides a case study of why more climate finances should be channeled towards the continent.
It is yet another call for international bodies like the UN and Western nations to mobilize more funds for African countries undergoing severe climate issues. This will also serve as climate justice for the African continent that is the lowest global emitter.
