The Democratic Republic of Congo is another victim of floods facing African nations. Areas of Ituri, Mbandaka, and the capital Kinshasa are mostly affected, having experienced long heavy rains from December.
This has led to the DRC government announcing a state of emergency barely 2 months after the rains started. Damages recorded include 150 meters of erosion in various areas. Also, over 360 villages and 36 districts across the country were flooded, impacting more than 320,000 residents.
Unfortunately, at least 300 people have died, and others are still missing. Experts, including urban planners, are concerned about the magnitude of the calamity and have asked for communal responsibility.
Hundreds of homes have been destroyed, with authorities left struggling to offer help to the displaced. As a result, a state of humanitarian emergency has been announced. Additionally, the government has set $4 million to cater to the ongoing flooding damage.
Yet again, DRC’s disaster management has been put on alert, with the country having suffered heavy rains early in 2023. The situation might worsen with authorities urging those in danger zones to find safety.
