39 leaders from the Three Basins (Amazon – Congo – Borneo – Mekong – South-East Asia) will be concluding their participation at the weekend-long Brazzaville Climate Change Summit. The convention was planned to happen in August, meant to discuss the preservation of tropical forests.
Among the attendees is Climate champion President William Ruto, expected to grace the final day of the Summit. Together with other leaders, like the Summit’s chair and president of the Republic of Congo, Denis Sassou, are aiming to protect over 350 million hectares of tropical forests.
With climate change lethal to the environment, the Summit provides a forum to discuss the protection of tropical forests. According to President Denis Sassou, “…in the face of accelerating climate change and its increasingly harmful consequences for human communities, animal and plant species, the Three Basins bear a major responsibility as the lungs of the planet, global regulators of carbon balance, and guardians of biodiversity.”
The Three basins cover 80% of the tropical forests globally, proving its importance in the push for net zero emissions. Forest experts state that the three basins’ tropical forests have the potential of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2050.
One of the methods to achieve the feat is through setting financial plans to protect and restore vital forest ecosystems. Finance discussions are among the main agendas of the Brazzaville Summit.Undoubtedly, Africa is on the right path in the fight against climate change and global warming. This summit comes off the heels of the Africa Climate Summit held in Nairobi in September, highlighting Africa’s efforts to be at the forefront of the fight against climate change.
